I listened to four Jefferson Starship LPs today. I don’t feel any better or worse for it, but I did recognize the distinctive piano bit from “Jane” on 1979’s Freedom at Point Zero LP (which, by the way, is one of those records whose title is better than its content, so feel free not to linger). Yesterday I reclaimed the Kantner/Slick Sunfighter LP from the sell pile, and though today’s J. Starship listening session won’t bear repeating, I’m still keeping Sunfighter. Respect for the recently dead motivates, I guess, as does hope that the Kantner/Slick non-Jefferson output is a little weirder than the four I sat through today. Once upon a time I had a Surrealistic Pillow, but I don’t know where it is now. I think it was wrecked and I sent it back to the dollar bins. “White Rabbit” isn’t that weird anyway, but I still wish I had that one now. If anyone wants to trade Surrealistic Pillow for Red Octopus, Spitfire, Earth, and Freedom at Point Zero, hit me up.
